He was called to the See also:bar in 186o, went the See also:northern See also:circuit, and took See also:silk in 1877. In 188o and 1885 he unsuccessfully contested See also:Whitehaven as a Liberal, but was elected for See also:Carlisle in 1886, and continued to represent that See also:constituency until his See also:elevation to the See also:peerage. In See also:April 1895 he was elected Speaker by a See also:majority of eleven votes over See also:Sir See also:Matthew See also:- WHITE

He died on the 6th of See also:November 1909, and was succeeded by his son, James William See also:Herschell Gully (b. 1867).
