See also:Malvern. His grandfather was See also:Daniel Gully, a Jamaican See also:coffee-planter. , He was educated at Trinity See also:College, See also:Cambridge, where he was See also:president of the See also:Union. He was called to the See also:bar in 186o, went the See also:northern See also:circuit, and took See also:silk in 1877. In 188o and 1885 he unsuccessfully contested See also:Whitehaven as a Liberal, but was elected for See also:Carlisle in 1886, and continued to represent that See also:constituency until his See also:elevation to the See also:peerage. In See also:April 1895 he was elected Speaker by a See also:majority of eleven votes over See also:Sir See also:Matthew See also:White See also:Ridley (cr. Viscount Ridley, 19o0), the Unionist nominee. In 1905 he resigned and was raised to the peerage with the See also:title of Viscount Selby, the name being that of his wife, See also:Miss See also:Elizabeth Selby (d. 1906), whom he married in 1865. He died on the 6th of See also:November 1909, and was succeeded by his son, James William See also:Herschell Gully (b. 1867).
