E. of See also:Milan on the lineto See also:Verona), situated 410 ft. above See also:sea-level, on the See also:south-See also:west edge of the hills bordering the See also:Lake of See also:Garda on the south. Pop. (1901), 1350. It was the See also:scene of a See also:battle fought on the 24th of See also:June 1859 between the allied Franco-Sardinian See also:army under See also:Napoleon III. and See also:Victor Emanuel, and the See also:Austrian army commanded by See also:Francis See also:Joseph IL, in which, after a severe contest, the latter retired over the Mincio "(see See also:ITALIAN See also:WARS). The battle fought by the Sardinians on the See also:left wing of the allied army is often called by the See also:separate See also:title of San Martino, from a See also:hamlet near the See also:Brescia-Verona railway, about which it was fought. From this battle, a certain shade of See also:blue was designated by the name of Solferino, and was very popular for some years, though now, unlike its See also:companion " See also:magenta," it is forgotten.
