SORAU , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Brandenburg, on the Sorebach, 54 M. S.E. of See also:Frankfort-on-See also:Oder by See also:rail, and at the junction of lines to See also:Cottbus and See also:Gorlitz. Pop. (1905), 16,410. One of the See also:oldest towns in See also:Lower See also:Lusatia, Sorau contains a number of See also:ancient buildings, among which the most prominent are several of the churches (one dating from 1204), the town See also:hall, built in 1260, and the old See also:palace of 1207 (now a See also:prison). The new palace, erected in 1711 by See also:Count See also:Erdmann II. of Promnitz, is utilized for See also:government offices.. The varied manufactures of the town comprise See also:cloth, See also:linen, See also:wax candles, See also:starch, See also:glass and See also:porcelain. Sorau is said to have existed in 840, and to have belonged to the See also:abbey of See also:Fulda till the 12th See also:century. It received civic rights in 1260. With the surrounding See also:district, known as the See also:barony of Sorau, it became the seat of successive See also:noble families; and in 1400 it was See also:united with the barony of Triebel. The last Count of Promnitz, whose ancestor had See also:purchased both baronies from See also:Frederick of Bohemia in 1556, sold them in 1765 to the elector of See also:Saxony for an See also:annuity of 12,000 thalers (rSoo). In 1815 Saxony ceded them to See also:Prussia.
