SOUTH AMBOY , a See also:city of See also:Middlesex See also:county, New See also:Jersey, U.S.A., on Raritan See also:Bay at the mouth of the Raritan See also:river, about 27 M. S.W. of New See also:York City. Pop. (1900) 6349 (1700 See also:foreign-See also:born); (191o) 7007. It is served by the See also:Pennsylvania, the Central of New Jersey, and the Raritan River See also:railways. A railway drawbridge and a See also:traffic See also:bridge across the river connect the city with See also:Perth Amboy. South Amboy is an important point for shipments of See also:coal from the Pennsylvania mines. The Pennsylvania Railroad See also:Company and the Susquehanna Coal Company have coal docks here and the latter has See also:great storage yards. Among the city's See also:industries are the See also:mining of See also:clay and See also:sand, and the manufacture of terra See also:cotta. South Amboy, originally a See also:part of South Amboy township (incorporated in 1798), was laid out in 1835, was incorporated as a See also:borough in 1888, and became a city under a See also:general See also:state See also:law in 1908.
