He studied at See also:Leipzig and See also:Berlin, and in course of See also:time became (1875) See also:professor ordinarius at See also:Giessen. Once a member of See also:Franz See also:Delitzsch's class, he became a convinced adherent of the newest See also:critical school. In 1881 he founded the Zeitschrift filr alttestamentliche Wissenschaft, which he continued to edit; and his critical See also:history of See also:Israel (Geschichte See also:des Volks Israel, 2 vols., 1887–1888; vol. ii. in See also:conjunction with Oscar See also:Holtzmann) has made him very widely known. With C. Siegfried he has revised and edited the See also:Hebrew See also:lexicon, Hebr. Worterbuch zum See also:Allen Testament (1892-1893). Stade's other See also:works include Uber See also:die alttestamentlichen Vorstellungen vom Zustand See also:neck dem Tode (1877), Lehrbuch der hebr. Grammatik (vol. i., 1879), Ausgewahlte akademische Reden and Abhandlungen (1899), and Biblische Theologie des Allen Testaments (1905, &c.). He died on the 6th of See also:December 1906. See O.
