In 187o he became See also:chief pastor and See also:superintendent at See also:Jena and soon afterwards See also:professor ordinarius of See also:theology, but in 1875 he was called to the See also:chair of systematic theology at See also:Berlin, having made his name by a See also:series of articles on New Testament See also:criticism and Johannine and Pauline theology, which appeared in Adolf See also:Hilgenfeld's Zeitschrift See also:fur wissenschaflliche Theologie, and by his Der Paulinismus, published in 1873 (2nd ed., 189o; Eng. trans., Paulinism: a Contribution to the See also:History of See also:Primitive See also:Christian Theology, 2 vols., 1873, &c.). Das Urchristentum, See also:seine Schriften and Lehren, in geschichtlicheni Zusammenhang beschrieben was published in 1878 and considerably enlarged for a second edition in 1902 -(Eng. trans., 1906). In 1890 appeared The Development of Theology since See also:Kant, and its Progress in See also:Great See also:Britain since 1825, which was written for publication in England. A more elaborate See also:work was his Religionsphilosophie auf geschichtlichen Grundlage (1878; 2nd ed., enlarged, 1883—1884; Eng. trans., from 2nd German ed., The See also:Philosophy of See also:Religion on the Basis of its History, 4 vols., 1886-1888). " The See also:Influence of the Apostle See also:Paul on the Development of See also:Christianity " was the See also:title of a course of Hibbert Lectures given in See also:London in 1885. In 1894 he delivered the See also:Gifford Lectures at See also:Edinburgh, the subject being " The Philosophy and Development of Religion." His later publications included: The See also:Early Christian Conception of See also:Christ (1905), See also:Die Entstehung See also:des Christentums (1905 ; Eng. trans., 1906), Religion und Religionen (1906; Eng, trans., 1907), and Die Entwicklung des Christentums (1907). He died on the 18th of See also:July 1908, at See also:Gross Lichterfelde, near Berlin.

In New Testament criticism Pfleiderer belonged to the See also:

critical school which See also:grew out of the impulse given by F. C. Balir. But, like other See also:modern German theologians, he showed a greater disposition to See also:compromise. All his work shows a judicial See also:tone of mind, and is remarkable for the See also:charm of its See also:style. Pfleiderer's younger See also:brother See also:EDMUND (1842—1902) distinguished himself both in philosophy and theology. He too entered the ministry (1864) and during the Franco-German See also:War served as See also:army See also:chaplain, an experience described in his Erlebnisse nines Feldgeistlichen (189o). He was afterwards appointed professor ordinarius of philosophy at See also:Kiel (1873), and in 1878 he was elected to the philosophical chair at Tubingen. He published See also:works on See also:Leibnitz, See also:empiricism and See also:scepticism in See also:Hume's philosophy, modern See also:pessimism, Kantic criticism, See also:English philosophy, Heraclitus of See also:Ephesus and many other subjects.
