In 1894 he delivered the See also:Gifford Lectures at See also:Edinburgh, the subject being " The Philosophy and Development of Religion." His later publications included: The See also:Early Christian Conception of See also:Christ (1905), See also:Die Entstehung See also:des Christentums (1905 ; Eng. trans., 1906), Religion und Religionen (1906; Eng, trans., 1907), and Die Entwicklung des Christentums (1907). He died on the 18th of See also:July 1908, at See also:Gross Lichterfelde, near Berlin. In New Testament criticism Pfleiderer belonged to the See also:critical school which See also:grew out of the impulse given by F. C. Balir. But, like other See also:modern German theologians, he showed a greater disposition to See also:compromise. All his work shows a judicial See also:tone of mind, and is remarkable for the See also:charm of its See also:style. Pfleiderer's younger See also:brother See also:EDMUND (1842—1902) distinguished himself both in philosophy and theology. He too entered the ministry (1864) and during the Franco-German See also:War served as See also:army See also:chaplain, an experience described in his Erlebnisse nines Feldgeistlichen (189o). He was afterwards appointed professor ordinarius of philosophy at See also:Kiel (1873), and in 1878 he was elected to the philosophical chair at Tubingen. He published See also:works on See also:Leibnitz, See also:empiricism and See also:scepticism in See also:Hume's philosophy, modern See also:pessimism, Kantic criticism, See also:English philosophy, Heraclitus of See also:Ephesus and many other subjects.
