He studied See also:theology and See also:oriental See also:languages in the university of his native See also:town, and in 185o was appointed See also:professor ordinaries of theology at See also:Erlangen, where the school of theologians became almost as famous as that of See also:Tubingen. In 1867 he accepted a See also:call to Leipzig, where he died on the 4th of See also:March 189o. Delitzsch was a strict Lutheran. " By the banner of our Lutheran See also:confession let us stand," he said in 1888; " folding ourselves in it, let us See also:die " (T. K. See also:Cheyne, Founders, p. 16o). Greatly interested in the See also:Jews, he longed ardently for their See also:conversion to See also:Christianity; and with a view to this he edited the periodical Saat auf HofJnung from 1863, revived the " Institutum Judaicum " in 188o, founded a Jewish missionary See also:college for the training of theologians, and translated the New Testament into See also:Hebrew. He acquired such a mastery of See also:post-biblical, rabbinic and talmudic literature that he has been called the " See also:Christian Talmudist." Though never an advanced critic, his See also:article on See also:Daniel in the second edition of See also:Herzog's Realencyklopadie, his New Commentary on See also:Genesis and the See also:fourth edition of his See also:Isaiah show that as years went on his sympathy with higher See also:criticism increased—so much so indeed that Prof. Cheyne has included him among its founders. He wrote a number of very valuable commentaries on See also:Habakkuk (1843), Genesis (1852, 4th ed.

1872), Neuer Kommentar fiber die Genesis (1887, Eng. trans. 1888, &e.), See also:

Psalms (4th ed. 1883, Eng. trans. 1886, &c.), See also:Job (2nd ed., 1876), Isaiah (4th ed. 1889, Eng. trans. 189o, &c.), See also:Proverbs (1873), See also:Epistle to the See also:Hebrews (1857, Eng. trans. 1865, &c.), See also:Song of Songs and See also:Ecclesiastes (4th ed., 1875). His son, See also:FRIEDRICH DELITZSCH (b. 1850), became well known as professor of Assyriology in See also:Berlin, and the author of many books of See also:great See also:research and learning, especially on oriental See also:philology. Among other works of importance he wrote Wo lag das Paradies? (1881), and See also:Babel and Babel (1902, 1903, Eng. trans. 1903).
