Sulina is the only See also:free See also:port on the Danube, and is much used for the transhipment into See also:sea-going vessels of See also:grain which is brought down the See also:river in large lighters from Rumania, See also:Russia, See also:Bulgaria, See also:Servia and See also:Austria-See also:Hungary. No agricultural produce is grown in its See also:neighbour-See also:hood, owing to the See also:reed-covered swamps with which it is surrounded. Sulina is the headquarters of the technical See also:department of the See also:European See also:Commission of the Danube (q.v.). Large steamers navigate up to See also:Galatz and See also:Braila. In 1901, 1411 steamers and sailing See also:craft aggregating 1,83o,00o tons See also:register cleared from Sulina for European ports carrying, besides other merchandise, nearly 13,00o,000 quarters of grain. Owing to the improvements effected by the European Commission, there is a See also:depth of 24 ft. of See also:water on the See also:bar, and of 18 to 22 ft. in the fairway.
