Valerian See also:chose for his own See also:part the See also:war in the See also:East, where See also:Antioch had fallen into the hands of a See also:Persian See also:vassal and See also:Armenia was occupied by See also:Shapur (Sapor) I., while in 258 the Goths ravaged See also:Asia See also:Minor. Valerian recovered Antioch, fought in See also:Mesopotamia with mixed success and finally was taken See also:captive. It is said that he was subjected to the greatest insults by his captors, and that after his death his skin was stuffed with See also:straw and preserved as a See also:trophy in the See also:chief Persian See also:temple. Owing to imperfect and contradictory authorities, the See also:chronology and details of this reign are very uncertain.
