WIRKSWORTH , a See also:

It is picturesquely situated at the See also:head of the valley of a small tributary of the See also:Derwent, at an See also:elevation exceeding Soo ft., and is almost encircled by sharply rising hills. The cruciform See also:church of St See also:Mary, with a central See also:tower and See also:short See also:spire, is in See also:great See also:part See also:Early See also:English, with Perpendicular additions; but considerable traces of a See also:Norman See also:building were revealed during a See also:modern restoration. There is a manufacture of tape in the town, and See also:lead-See also:mining and See also:stone-See also:quarrying are carried on in the neighbourhood; See also:relics of the See also:Roman working of the lead mines have been discovered. A large See also:brass See also:vessel used as a See also:standard measure for the lead ore, and dating from the See also:time of See also:Henry VIII., is preserved.
