Having studied at the university of See also:Gottingen, Adolphus Frederick served in the Hanoverian and See also:British armies, and, in See also:November 18o1, was created See also:earl of See also:Tipperary and duke of Cambridge, becoming a member of the privy See also:council in the following See also:year. The duke is chiefly known for his connexion with See also:Hanover. In 1815, on the conclusion of the See also:war, the electorate of Hanover was raised to the See also:rank of a See also:kingdom, and in the following year the duke was appointed See also:viceroy. He held this position until the separation of See also:Great See also:Britain and Hanover in 1837, and displaying tact and moderation, appears to have ruled the See also:country with great success during a difficult See also:period. Returning to See also:England the duke became very popular, and was active in supporting many learned and benevolent See also:societies. He died in London on the 8th of See also:July 1850, In 1818 he married See also:Augusta (1797-1889), daughter of Frederick, See also:landgrave of See also:Hesse-See also:Cassel.
