ASTLEY, See also:SIR See also:JOHN DIIGDALB , See also:Bart. (1828-1894), See also:English soldier and sportsman, was a descendant of See also:Lord Astley, and son of the 2nd See also:baronet (cr. 1821). From 1848 to 1859 he was in the See also:army, serving in the See also:Crimean See also:War and retiring as See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel. He married an heiress in 1858, and thenceforth devoted himself to See also:horse-racing, See also:pugilism and See also:sport in See also:general. He succeeded to the baronetcy in 1873, and from 1874 to 188o was Conservative M.P. for See also:North See also:Lincolnshire. He was a popular figure on the See also:turf, being familiarly known as " the See also:Mate," and won and lost large sums of See also:money. Just before his See also:death, on the loth of See also:October x894, he published some entertaining reminiscences, under the See also:title of Fifty Years of my See also:Life.
