LOUIS See also:JEAN See also:BAPTISTE D' (1804-1877), See also:French See also:general, was See also:born at Malzieu, See also:Lozere, on the 9th of See also:January 1804. He was educated at St Cyr, and entered the See also:army as sub-See also:lieutenant of See also:foot in 1824. He served with distinction in See also:Algeria between 1841 and 1848, becominglieut.-See also:colonel and an officer of the See also:Legion of See also:Honour; took See also:part in the See also:Roman See also:campaigns of 1848 and 1849, and was made colonel. He served as general of See also:brigade throughout the See also:Crimean See also:War of 1854-56, being promoted general of See also:division and See also:commander of the Legion of Honour. During the See also:campaign in See also:Lombardy in 1859 he commanded at See also:Marseilles, and superintended the despatch of men and stores to the seat of war, and for his services he was made a See also:grand officer of the Legion of Honour. Placed on the reserve See also:list in 1869, he was recalled to the Marseilles command on the outbreak of the Franco-See also:German War of 1870-71. After the first See also:capture of See also:Orleans by the Germans, he was appointed by the See also:Government of See also:National See also:Defence, in See also:November 1870, to the command of the Army of the See also:Loire. He was at first very successful against von der Tann-Rathsamhausen, winning the See also:battle of Coulmiers and compelling the Germans to evacuate Orleans, but the See also:capitulation of See also:Metz had set See also:free additional German troops to oppose him, and, after his defeat at See also:Beaune la Rolande and subsequent unsuccessful fighting near Orleans, resulting in its recapture by the Germans in See also:December, Aurelle retreated into the See also:Sologne and was superseded. After the See also:armistice he was elected to the National See also:Assembly by the departments both of See also:Allier and See also:Gironde. He sat for Allier and was one of the fifteen See also:officers chosen to assist in the See also:peace negotiations. He was decorated with the grand See also:cross of the Legion of Honour, and was given the command at Bordeftux, but retired in 1872. Elected a See also:life senator in 1875, he supported the monarchical See also:majority of 1876.

He died at See also:

Versailles on the 17th of December 1877. He was the author of La Premiere Armee de la Loire, published in 1872.
