AZAMGARH, or AZIMGARH , a See also:city and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Gorakhpur See also:division of the See also:United Provinces. The See also:town is situated on the See also:river Tons, and has a railway station. It is said to have been founded about 1665 by a powerful landholder named Azim See also:Khan, who owned large estates in this See also:part of the See also:country. Pop. (1901) 18,835. The See also:area of the district is 2207 sq. m. It is bounded on the N. by the river See also:Gogra, separating it from Gorakhpur district; on the E. by See also:Ghazipur district and the river See also:Ganges; on the S. by the districts of See also:Jaunpur and Ghazipur; and on the W. by Jaunpur and See also:Fyzabad. The portion of the district lying along the See also:banks of the Gogra is a See also:low-lying See also:tract, varying considerably in width; See also:south of this, however, the ground takes a slight rise. The slope of the See also:land is from See also:north-See also:west to south-See also:east, but the See also:general drainage is very inadequate. Roughly speaking, the district consists of a See also:series of parallel ridges, whose summits are depressed into beds or hollows, along which the See also:rivers flow; while between the ridges are low-lying See also:rice lands, interspersed with numerous natural reservoirs. The See also:soil is fertile, and very highly cultivated, bearing magnificent crops of rice, See also:sugar-See also:cane and See also:indigo. There are several indigo factories.

branch of the See also:Bengal & North-Western railway to Azamgarh town was opened in 1898. In 1901 the See also:population was 1,529,785, showing a decrease of 11 jo in the See also:decade. The district was ceded to the See also:Company in 18or by the wazirs of See also:Lucknow. In 1857 it became a centre of See also:mutiny. On the 3rd of See also:June 1857 the 17th See also:Regiment of Native See also:Infantry mutinied at Azamgarh, murdered some of their See also:officers, and carried off the See also:government treasure to Fyzabad. The district became a centre of the fighting between the Gurkhas and the rebels, and was not finally cleared until See also:October 1858 by See also:Colonel See also:Kelly.
