BAGELKHAND, or BAGHELKEAND , a See also:tract of See also:country in central See also:India, occupied by a collection of native states. The Bagelkhand agency is under the See also:political superintendence of the See also:governor-See also:general's See also:agent for central India, and under the See also:direct See also:jurisdiction of a political agent who is also See also:superintendent of the See also:Rewa See also:state, residing ordinarily at Sutna or Rewa. The agency consists of Rewa state and eleven See also:minor states and estates, of which the more important are See also:Maihar, See also:Nagode and Sohawal. The See also:total See also:area is 14,323 sq. M., and the See also:population in See also:root was 1,555,024, showing a decrease of ix % in the See also:decade, due to the results of See also:famine. The rainfall was very deficient in 1895–1897, causing famine in 1897; and in 1899–1900 there was drought in some sections. The agency was established in See also:March 1871. Until that date Bagelkhand was under .the See also:Bundelkhand agency, with which it is geographically and historically connected; a general description of the country will be found under that heading. According to See also:Wilson, in his Glossary of See also:Indian Terms, the Baghelas, who give their name to this tract of country, are a See also:branch of the Sisodhyia Rajputs who migrated eastward and once ruled in See also:Gujarat.
