WILLIAM HELLIER (1819-1888) , See also:English palaeontologist, See also:nephew of E. H. Baily the sculptor, was See also:born at See also:Bristol on the 7th of See also:July 1819. From 1837 to 1844 he was Assistant See also:Curator in the Bristol Museum, a See also:post he relinquished to join the See also:staff of the See also:Geological Survey in See also:London. In 1854 he became assistant naturalist, under See also:Edward See also:Forbes and afterwards under See also:Huxley. In 1857 he .was transferred to the Irish See also:branch of the Geological Survey, as acting palaeontologist, and retained this post until the end of his See also:life. He was the author of many papers on palaeontological subjects, and of notes on fossils in the explanatory See also:memoirs of the Geological Survey of See also:Ireland. He published (1867-1875) a useful See also:work entitled Figures of Characteristic See also:British Fossils, with Descriptive Remarks, of which only the first See also:volume, dealing with palaeozoic See also:species, was issued. The figures were all See also:drawn on See also:- STONE
