He was well acquainted with Sir See also:William Segar and with See also:Dugdale, to whose Monasticon he contributed. He was knighted by See also:Charles I. in 1630, was made See also:Lyon See also:king-at-arms in the same See also:year, and in 1633 See also:baronet of Kinnaird. He was removed from his See also:office of king-at-arms by See also:Cromwell and died in 1657. Some of his numerous See also:works are preserved in the See also:Advocates' library at See also:Edinburgh, together with his correspondence—from which See also:rich collection Haig published Balfour's Annales of See also:Scotland in 4 vols. 8vo (1824-1825).
