Educated at See also:Repton, whence he proceeded to See also:Aberdeen University, he became in 1817 See also:vicar of Little Horwood, See also:Buckinghamshire, and devoted his spare See also:time to literature and particularly to the study of Anglo-Saxon. In 1823 appeared his Elements of Anglo-Saxon See also:Grammar. In 1829 Bosworth went to See also:Holland as See also:chaplain, first at See also:Amsterdam and then at See also:Rotterdam. He remained in Holland until 184o, working there on his See also:Dictionary of the Anglo-Saxon See also:Language (1838), his best-known See also:work. In 1857 he became See also:rector of See also:Water Shelford, Buckinghamshire, and in the following See also:year was appointed See also:Rawlinson See also:professor of Anglo-Saxon at See also:Oxford. He gave to the university of See also:Cambridge in 1867 £,o,000 for theestablishment of a professorship of Anglo-Saxon. He died on the 27th of May 1876, leaving behind him a See also:mass of annotations on the Anglo-Saxon charters.
