Having taken his degree at See also:Oxford (from Trinity See also:College) in 1838, he was elected to a fellowship at See also:Exeter College in 1840, of which from 1842 to 1846 he was See also:fellow and See also:tutor. He was ordained in 1841; was See also:Hampton lecturer in 1859, and See also:Camden See also:professor of See also:ancient See also:history from 1861 to 1889. In 1872 he was appointed See also:canon of See also:Canterbury, and after 1888 he was See also:rector of All Hallows, Lombard See also:Street. In 1873 he was appointed See also:proctor in See also:Convocation for the See also:Chapter of Canterbury. He married Louisa, daughter of Sir R. A. Chermside, in 1846. His See also:chief publications are his See also:translation of the History of See also:Herodotus (in collaboration with Sir Henry Rawlinson and Sir See also:Gardner See also:Wilkinson), 1858—6o; The Five See also:Great Monarchies, of the Ancient Eastern See also:World, 1862—67; The See also:Sixth Great See also:Oriental See also:Monarchy (See also:Parthian), 1873; The Seventh Great Oriental Monarchy (See also:Sassanian), 1875; See also:Manual of Ancient History, 1869; See also:Historical Illustrations of the Old Testament, 1871; The Origin of Nations, 1877; History of Ancient See also:Egypt, 1881; Egypt and See also:Babylon, 1885; History of See also:Phoenicia, 1889; See also:Parthia, 1893; Memoir of See also:Major-See also:General Sir H. C. Rawlinson, 1898. He was a contributor to the See also:Speaker's Commentary, the See also:Pulpit Commentary, See also:Smith's See also:Dictionary of the See also:Bible, and various similar publications; and he was the author of the See also:article " Herodotus in the 9th edition of the Ency.
