BRAY , a seaport and watering-See also:place of Co. See also:Wicklow, See also:Ireland, 12 M. S.S.E. of See also:Dublin on the Dublin & See also:South-Eastern railway, situated on both sides of the See also:river Bray. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1901) 7424. For See also:parliamentary purposes it is divided between the eastern See also:division of See also:county Wicklow and the See also:southern of county Dublin. A See also:harbour was constructed by the urban district See also:council (the harbour authority) which accommodates See also:ships of 400 tons. There is some See also:industry in See also:brewing, milling and fishing, but the See also:town, which is known as the " Irish See also:Brighton," is almost wholly dependent for its prosperity on visitors from Dublin and elsewhere. It therefore possesses all the equipments of a See also:modern seaside resort; there is a See also:fine See also:sea-See also:wall with esplanade upwards of a mile in length; the bathing is See also:good, and See also:race meetings are held. The town is rapidly increasing in See also:size. The See also:coast, especially towards the promontory of Bray See also:Head, offers beautiful sea-views, and some of the best inland scenery in the county is readily accessible, such as the Glens of the Dargle and the See also:Downs, the See also:demesne of Powerscourt, the Bray river,with its loughs, and the pass of the See also:Scalp. The demesne of Kilruddery, the seat of the earls of See also:Meath, is specially beautiful. About 1170 Bray was bestowed by See also:Richard de See also:Clare or Strong-See also:bow, See also:earl of See also:Pembroke and Strigul, on See also:Walter de Reddesford, who took the See also:title of See also:baron of Bray, and built a See also:castle.
