In 18o1 See also:Pius VII. had given the Jesuits See also:liberty to reconstitute themselves in See also:north See also:Russia (see JESUITS: See also:History), and in 1812 Brzozowski secured the recognition of the Jesuit See also:college of See also:Polotsk as a university, though he could not obtain permission to go to See also:Spain to agitate for the recognition of the See also:Spanish Jesuits. In 1814 Pius VII., In accordance with the See also:bull Sollicitudo omnium ecclesiarum, gave to Brzozowski among others full authority to receive those who desired to enter the society. The See also:Russian See also:government, however, soon began to be alarmed at the growth of the Jesuits, and on the 20th of See also:December 1815 published an See also:edict expelling them from St See also:Petersburg. Brzozowski, having vainly requested to be allowed to retire to See also:Rome, died on the 5th of See also:February 1820. He is interesting mainly from the fact that he was general of the Society at the See also:time of its restoration throughout See also:Europe.
