See also:BURNABY, See also:FREDERICK GUSTAVUS (1842-1885) , See also:English traveller and soldier, was See also:born on the 3rd of See also:March 1842, at See also:Bedford, the son of a clergyman. Educated at See also:Harrow and in See also:Germany, he entered the Royal See also:Horse See also:Guards in 1859. In the summer of 1874 he accompanied the Carlist forces as correspondent of The Times, but before the end of the See also:war he was transferred to See also:Africa to See also:report on See also:Gordon's expedition to the See also:Sudan. This took Burnaby as far as See also:Khartum. Returning to See also:England in March 1875, he matured his plans for a See also:journey on horseback to See also:Khiva through See also:Russian See also:Asia, which had just been closed to travellers. At this point began his active See also:interest in politics, and in 188o he unsuccessfully contested a seat at See also:Birmingham in the Tory-Democrat interest. In 1882 he crossed the Channel in a balloon. Having been disappointed in his See also:hope of seeing active service in the See also:Egyptian campaign of 1882, he participated in the See also:Suakin campaign of 1884 without See also:official leave, and was wounded at El Teb when acting as an intelligence officer under See also:General See also:Valentine See also:Baker. This did not deter him from a similar course when a fresh expedition started up the See also:Nile. He was given a See also:post by See also:Lord See also:Wolseley, and met his See also:death in the See also:hand-to-hand fighting of the See also:battle of See also:Abu Klea (17th See also:January 1885).
