CHATELLERAULT , a See also:

town of western See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Vienne, 19 M. N.N.E. of See also:Poitiers on the See also:Orleans railway between that town and See also:Tours. Pop. (1906) 15,214. Chatellerault is situated on the right and eastern See also:bank of the Vienne; it is connected with the suburb of See also:Chateauneuf on the opposite See also:side of the See also:river by a See also:stone See also:bridge of the 16th and 17th centuries, guarded at the western extremity by massive towers. The manufacture of See also:cutlery is carried on on a large See also:scale in villages on the See also:banks of the Clain, See also:south of the town. Of the other See also:industrial establishments the most important is the See also:national small-arms factory, which was established in 1815 in Chateauneuf, and employs from 1500 to 5500 men. Chatellerault (or Chatelherault: Castellum Airaldi) derives its name from a fortress built in the loth See also:century by Airaud, See also:viscount of its territory. In 1515 it was made a duchy in favour of See also:Francois de See also:Bourbon, but it was not See also:long after this date that it became reunited to the See also:crown. In 1548 it was bestowed on See also:James See also:Hamilton, and See also:earl of See also:Arran (see HAMILTON).
