Chenonceaux owes its See also:interest to its See also:chateau (see See also:ARCHITECTURE: See also:Renaissance Architecture in France), a See also:building in the Renaissance See also:style on the See also:river Cher, to the See also:left bank of which it is See also:united by a two-storeyed See also:gallery built upon five See also:arches, and to the right by a drawbridge flanked by an isolated See also:tower, See also:part of an earlier building of the 15th See also:century. Founded in 1515 by See also:Thomas Bohier (d. 1523), See also:financial See also:minister in See also:Normandy, the chateau was confiscated by See also:Francis I. in 1535. See also:Henry II. presented it to his See also:mistress Diane de See also:Poitiers, who on his See also:death was forced to See also:exchange it for Chaumont-sur-Loire by See also:Catherine de' See also:Medici. The latter built the gallery which leads to the left bank of the Cher. Chenonceaux passed successively into the hands of See also:Louise de Vaudemont, wife of Henry III., the See also:house of See also:Vendome, and the See also:family of See also:Bourbon-See also:Conde. In the 18th century it came into the See also:possession of the See also:farmer-See also:general See also:Claude See also:Dupin (1684–176g), who entertained the most distinguished See also:people in France within its walls. In 1864 it was sold to the chemist See also:Theophile See also:Pelouze, whose wife executed extensive restorations.

It subsequently became the See also:

property of the See also:Credit Foncier, and again passed into private occupancy.
