DUNTZER, JOHANN HEINRICH See also:JOSEPH (1813-1901) , See also:German philologist and historian of literature, was See also:born at See also:Cologne on the 12th of See also:July 1813. After studying See also:philology and especially See also:ancient See also:classics and See also:Sanskrit at See also:Bonn and See also:Berlin (183o-1835), he took the degree of See also:doctor of See also:philosophy and established himself in 1837 at Bonn as Privat docent for classical literature. He had already, in his Goethes See also:Faust in seiner Einheit and Ganzheit (1836) and See also:Goethe als Dramatiker (1837), advocated a new See also:critical method in interpreting the German classics, which he wished to see treated like the ancient classics. He subsequently turned his See also:attention almost exclusively to the poets of the German classical See also:period, notably Goethe and See also:Schiller. Dtintzer's method met with much opposition and he consequently failed to obtain the professorship he coveted. In 1846 he accepted the See also:post of librarian at the See also:Roman Catholicgymnasium in Cologne, where he died on the 16th of See also:December 1901. Diintzer was a painstaking and accurate critic, but lacking in See also:inspiration and finer See also:literary See also:taste; consequently his See also:work as a biographer and commentator has, to a See also:great extent, been superseded and discredited. Among his philological writings may be mentioned See also:Die Lehre von der lateinischen Wortbildung (1836); Die Deklination der indogermanischen Sprachen (1839) ; See also:Homer and der epische Kyklos (1839) ; Die homerischen Beiworter See also:des Getter- and Menschengeschlechts (1859).
