city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Mecklenburg county, See also:North Carolina, U.S.A., situated on See also:Sugar See also:Creek, in the See also:south-See also:west See also:part of the See also:state, about 175 M. south-west of See also:Raleigh. Pop. (189o) 11,557; (1900) 18,091, of whom 7151 were negroes; (1910 See also:census) 34,014. It is served by the Seaboard See also:Air See also:Line and the See also:Southern See also:railways: Among • the public buildings are a See also:fine city See also:hall, See also:court-See also:house, Federal and See also:Young Men's See also:Christian Association buildings, and a See also:Carnegie library; several hospitals: St See also:Peter's (Episcopal) for whites, See also:Good Samaritan (Episcopal) for negroes, See also:Mercy See also:General (See also:Roman See also:Catholic) and a Presbyterian. The city has large See also:cotton, clothing, and See also:knitting See also:mills, and manufactories of cotton-See also:seed oil, tools, machinery, fertilizers and See also:furniture. The See also:total value of its factory products was $4,849,630 in 1905. There are large electric See also:power See also:plants in and near the city. See also:Printing and See also:publishing are of some importance: Charlotte is the publication headquarters of the See also:African Methodist Episcopal See also:Zion See also:Church; and several textile See also:trade See also:journals and two medical See also:periodicals are published here. The See also:water-See also:works are owned by the See also:municipality. Charlotte was settled about 1750 and was incorporated in 1768.

Here in May 1775 was adopted the " Mecklenburg See also:

Declaration of See also:Independence " (see NORTH CAROLINA), and in See also:honour of its signers there is a See also:monument in front of the court-house. Charlotte was occupied in See also:September 1780 by See also:Cornwallis, who See also:left it after learning of the See also:battle of See also:King's See also:Mountain, and subsequently it became the See also:principal See also:base and See also:rendezvous of General See also:Greene.
