ESTREES, GABRIELLE D' (1573-1599), See also:mistress of See also:Henry IV. of See also:France, was the daughter of See also:Antoine d'Estrees, See also:marquis of Cceuvres, and Francoise Babou de la Bourdaisiere. Henry IV., who in See also:November 1590 stayed at the See also:castle of Cceuvres, became violently enamoured of her. Her See also:father, anxious to See also:save his daughter from so perilous an entanglement, married her to See also:Nicholas d'Amerval, seigneur de Liancourt, but the See also:union proved unhappy, and in See also:December 1592, Gabrielle, whose See also:affection for the See also:king was sincere, became his mistress. She lived with him from December 1592 onwards, and See also:bore him several See also:children, who were recognized and legitimized by him. She possessed the king's entire confidence; he willingly listened to her See also:advice, and created her marchioness of Monceaux, duchess of See also:Beaufort (1597) and See also:Etampes (1598), a peeress of France. The king even proposed to marry her in the event of the success of his suit for the See also:nullification by the See also:Holy See of his See also:marriage with See also:Margaret of See also:Valois; but before the question was settled Gabrielle died, on the loth of See also:April 1599. See also:Poison was of course suspected; but her See also:death was really caused by puerperal See also:convulsions (eclampsia).
