FRIEDRICH BALDUIN , Freiherr von See also:Gagern (1794–1848), the eldest, was See also:born at See also:Weilburg on the 24th of See also:October 1794. He entered the university of See also:Gottingen, but soon See also:left, and, taking service in the See also:Austrian See also:army, took See also:part in the See also:Russian See also:campaign of 1812, and fought in the following See also:year at See also:Dresden, See also:Kulm and See also:Leipzig. He then entered the Dutch service, took part in the See also:campaigns of 1815, and, after studying another year at See also:Heidelberg, was member for See also:Luxemburg of the military See also:commission of the See also:German federal See also:diet (1824, 1825). In 1830 and 1831 he took part in the Dutch campaign in See also:Belgium, and in 1844, after being promoted to the See also:rank of See also:general, was sent on an important See also:mission to the Dutch See also:East Indies to inquire into the See also:state of their military defences. In 1847 he was appointed See also:governor at the See also:Hague, and commandant in See also:South See also:Holland. In the See also:spring of 1848 he was in See also:Germany, and on the outbreak of the revolutionary troubles he accepted the invitation of the See also:government of See also:Baden to take the command against the insurgent " See also:free companies " (Freischaaren). At Kandern, on the loth of See also:April, he made a vain effort to persuade the leaders to submit, and was about to See also:order his troops to attack when he was mortally wounded by the bullets of the insurgents. His See also:Life, in 3 vols. (Heidelberg and Leipzig, 1856–1857), was written by his See also:brother Heinrich von Gagern.
