HEDDLE, See also:MATTHEW See also:FORSTER (1828-1897) , Scottish mineralogist, was See also:born at by in See also:Orkney on the 28th of See also:April 1824. After receiving his See also:early See also:education at the See also:Edinburgh See also:academy, he entered as a medical student at the university in that See also:city, and subsequently studied See also:chemistry and See also:mineralogy at Klausthal and See also:Freiburg. In 1851 he took his degree of M.D. at Edinburgh, and for about five years practised there. Medical See also:work, however, possessed for him little attraction; he became assistant to Prof. Connell, who held the See also:chair of chemistry at St See also:Andrews, and in 1862 succeeded him as See also:professor. This See also:post he held until in 188o he was invited to See also:report on some See also:gold mines in See also:South See also:Africa. On his return he devoted himself with See also:great assiduity to mineralogy, and formed one of the finest collections by means of See also:personal exploration in almost every See also:part of See also:Scotland. His specimens are now in the Royal Scottish Museum at Edinburgh. It had been his intention to publish a comprehensive work on the mineralogy of Scotland. This he did not live to See also:complete, but the See also:MSS. See also:fell into able hands, and The Mineralogy f Scotland, in 2 vols., edited by J. G. Goodchild, was issued in 1901.

Heddle was one of the founders of the Mineralogical Society, and he contributed many articles on Scottish minerals, arid on the See also:

geology of the See also:northern parts of Scotland, to the Mineralogical See also:Magazine, as well as to the Transactions of Um Royal Society of Edinburgh. He died on the 19th of See also:November 18S e Dr Heddle and his See also:Geological Work (with portrait), by J. G. Goodchild, Trans. Edin. Geol. See also:Soc. (1898) vii. 317.
