In 1805 he was apprenticed to an engraver in See also:Paris, and he also studied See also:painting and See also:engraving simultaneously in the lcole See also:des See also:Beaux-Arts. His preference was ultimately fixed on the latter See also:art, and on his obtaining in 1814 the first " See also:grand prix de gravure," the See also:king of See also:Prussia, who was then with the See also:allies in Paris, bestowed on him a See also:gold See also:medal, and a See also:pension of 1500 francs for two years. With the aid of this sum he pursued his studies in See also:Rome, where his See also:attention was devoted chiefly to the See also:works of See also:Raphael. In 1844 he succeeded Tardieu in the See also:Academy. He died at Paris on the 27th of See also:June 1872. Forster occupied the first position among the French engravers of his See also:time, and was equally successful in See also:historical pieces and in portraits. Among his works may be mentioned—The Three See also:Graces, and La See also:Vierge de la legende, after Raphael; La Vierge au bas-See also:relief, after Leonardo da See also:Vinci; See also:Francis I. and See also:Charles V., after See also:Gros; St See also:Cecilia, after See also:Paul See also:Delaroche; See also:Albert Diirer and See also:Henry IV., after Porbus; See also:Wellington, after See also:Gerard; and See also:Queen See also:Victoria, after Winterhalter.
