GERARD (c. 1040-1120) , variously surnamed Tura, TUNc, TENQUE or THOM, founder of the See also:order of the knights of St See also:John of See also:Jerusalem (q.v.), was See also:born at See also:Amalfi about the See also:year 1040. According to other accounts See also:Martigues in See also:Provence was his birthplace, while one authority even names the See also:Chateau d'See also:Avesnes in See also:Hainaut. Either as a soldier or a See also:merchant, he found his way to Jerusalem, where a See also:hospice had for some See also:time existed for the convenience of those who wished to visit the See also:holy places. Of this institution Gerard became See also:guardian or See also:provost at a date not later than Iroo; and here he organized that religious order of St John which received papal recognition from See also:Paschal II. in 1113, by a See also:bull which was renewed and confirmed by See also:Calixtus II. shortly before the See also:death of Gerard in 1120.
