KARLSKRONA [CARLSCRONA,] a seaport of See also:Sweden, on the Baltic See also:coast, See also:chief See also:town of the See also:district (Ian) of Blekinge, and See also:head-quarters of the See also:Swedish See also:navy. Pop. (1900), 23,955. It is pleasantly situated upon islands and the mainland, 290 M. S.S.W. of See also:Stockholm by See also:rail: The See also:harbour is capacious and secure, with a sufficient See also:depth of See also:water for the largest vessels. It has three entrances; the See also:principal, and the only one practicable for large vessels, is to the See also:south of the town, and is defended by two strong forts, at Drottningskar on the See also:island of Aspo, and on the islet of Kungsholm. The dry docks, of See also:great extent, are cut out of the solid See also:granite. There is slip-See also:accommodation for large vessels. Karlskrona is the seat of the Royal See also:Naval Society, and has a navy-See also:arsenal and See also:hospital, and naval and other See also:schools. See also:Charles XI., the founder of the town as naval headquarters (168o), is commemorated by a See also:bronze statue (1897). There are factories for naval equipments, galvanized See also:metal goods, See also:felt hats, See also:canvas, See also:leather and See also:rice, and breweries and granite quarries. Exports are granite and See also:timber; Imports, See also:coal, See also:flour, provisions, hides and machinery.
