Pop. (1900), 23,955. It is pleasantly situated upon islands and the mainland, 290 M. S.S.W. of See also:Stockholm by See also:rail: The See also:harbour is capacious and secure, with a sufficient See also:depth of See also:water for the largest vessels. It has three entrances; the See also:principal, and the only one practicable for large vessels, is to the See also:south of the town, and is defended by two strong forts, at Drottningskar on the See also:island of Aspo, and on the islet of Kungsholm. The dry docks, of See also:great extent, are cut out of the solid See also:granite. There is slip-See also:accommodation for large vessels. Karlskrona is the seat of the Royal See also:Naval Society, and has a navy-See also:arsenal and See also:hospital, and naval and other See also:schools.
