KASSALA , a See also:town and mudiria of the Anglo-See also:Egyptian See also:Sudan. The town, a military station of some importance, lies on the See also:river Gash (Mareb) in 15° 28' N., 36° 24' E., 26o m. E.S.E. of See also:Khartum and 240 M. W. of See also:Massawa, the nearest seaport. Pop. about 20,000. It is built on a See also:plain, 1700 ft. above the See also:sea, at the See also:foot of the Abyssinian See also:highlands 15 M.W. of the frontier of the See also:Italian See also:colony of See also:Eritrea. Two See also:dome-shaped mountains about 2600 ft. high, jebels Mokram and Kassala, rise abruptly from the plain some 3 m. to 'the See also:east and See also:south-east. These mountains and the numerous gardens Kassala contains give to the See also:place a picturesque See also:appearance. The See also:chief buildings are of See also:brick, but most of the natives dwell in grass tukls. A See also:short distance from the town is Khatmia, containing a See also:tomb See also:mosque with a high See also:tower, the headquarters of the Morgani See also:family. The sheikhs El Morgani are the chiefs of a religious brotherhood widely spread and of considerable See also:influence in the eastern Sudan. The Morgani family are of Afghan descent. See also:Long settled in See also:Jidda, the See also:head of the family removed to the Sudan about 1800 and founded the Morgani See also:sect. Kassala was founded by the Egyptians in 184o as a fortified See also:post from which to See also:control their newly conquered territory near the Abyssinian frontier. In a few years it See also:grew into a place of some importance. In See also:November 1883 it was besieged by the dervishes. The See also:garrison held out till the 3oth of See also:July 1885 when owing to lack of See also:food they capitulated. Kassala was captured from the dervishes by an Italian force under See also:Colonel Baratieri on the 17th of July 1894 and by the Italians was handed over on See also:Christmas See also:day 1897 to See also:Egypt. The bulk of the inhabit-ants are Hallenga " See also:Arabs."
Kassala mudiria contains some of the most fertile See also:land in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. It corresponds roughly with the See also:district formerly known as Taka. It is a region of See also:light rainfall, and cultivation depends chiefly on the Gash See also:flood. The river is how-ever absolutely dry from See also:October to See also:June.
