KILRUSH , a seaport and watering-See also:

place of See also:county See also:Clare, See also:Ireland, in the See also:west See also:parliamentary See also:division, on the See also:north See also:shore of the See also:Shannon See also:estuary 45 in. below See also:Limerick. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (Igor), 4179. It is the See also:terminus of a See also:branch of the West Clare railway. The only seaport of importance in the county, it has a considerable export See also:trade in See also:peat See also:fuel, extensive See also:fisheries, and flagstone quarries; while See also:general fairs, See also:horse fairs and See also:annual agricultural shows are held. The inner See also:harbour admits only small vessels, but there is a See also:good See also:pier a mile See also:south of the See also:town. Off the harbour lies Scattery See also:Island (Inis Cathaigh), where St Senan (d. 544) founded a monastery. There are the remains of his See also:oratory and See also:house and of seven See also:rude churches or chapels, together with a See also:round See also:tower and a See also:holy well still in repute. The island also received the epithet of Holy, and was a favourite See also:burial-ground until See also:modern times.
