The See also:town has 15,000 inhabitants and is clean and well built; the See also:country around being practically See also:desert, it depends entirely on the See also:sea and its See also:trade, and its sailors have a high reputation as the most skilful and trustworthy on the Persian Gulf; while its position as the nearest port to Upper See also:Nejd gives it See also:great importance as the port of entry for See also:rice, piece goods, &c., and of export for horses, See also:sheep, See also:wool and other products of the interior. Kuwet was recommended in 185o by See also:General F. R. See also:Chesney as the See also:terminus of his proposed See also:Euphrates Valley railway, and since 1898, when the See also:extension of the Anatolian railway to See also:Bagdad and the Gulf has been under discussion, See also:attention has again been directed to it. An alternative site for the terminus has been suggested in See also:Urn Khasa, at the See also:head of the Khor `Abdallah, where a See also:branch of the Shat el Arab formerly entered the sea; it lies some 20 M. N.E. of Kuwet and separated from it by the See also:island of Bubian, which has for some See also:time been in See also:Turkish occupation. An See also:attempt by See also:Turkey to occupy Kuwet in 1893 was met by a formal protest from Great See also:Britain against any infringement of the status quo, and in 1899 See also:Sheikh Mubarak of Kuwet placed his interests under See also:British See also:protection. The See also:total trade passing through Kuwet in 1904–1905 was valued at £16c,oco. The imports include arms and See also:ammunition, piece goods, rice, See also:coffee, See also:sugar, &c.; and the exports, horses, pearls, See also:dates, wool, &c.
