LOUIS (1752-1797) , See also:French revolutionist, was See also:born at See also:Versailles on the 22nd of May 1752. When the Revolution See also:broke out, he kept a See also:butcher's See also:shop in See also:Paris, in the See also:rue See also:des Boucheries St Germain. He was an ardent supporter of the ideas of the Revolution, a member of the Jacobin See also:Club, and one of the founders of the club of the See also:Cordeliers. In spite of the incorrectness of his diction, he was gifted with a genuine eloquence, and well knew how to carry the populace with him. He was a prominent actor in the taking of the See also:Bastille (14th of See also:July 1789), in the See also:massacre of the Champ de See also:Mars (July 1791), and in the attack on the Tuileries (loth of See also:August 1792). See also:Deputy from Paris to the See also:Convention, he voted for the See also:death of Louis XVI., and was sent on See also:mission to See also:Lyons (27th of See also:February 1793) before the revolt of that See also:town, and was on mission from August to See also:October 1793 in See also:Seine-Inferieure. He was a member of the Comite de Secrete Generale, and contributed to the downfall of the See also:Girondists. When See also:Danton was arrested, Legendre at first defended him, but was soon cowed and withdrew his See also:defence. After the fall of See also:Robespierre, Legendre took See also:part in the reactionary See also:movement, undertook the closing of the Jacobin Club, was elected See also:president of the Convention, and helped to bring about the See also:impeachment of J. B. See also:Carrier, the perpetrator of the noyades of See also:Nantes. He was subsequently elected a member of the See also:Council of Ancients, and died on the 13th of See also:December 1797.
