In 186o he was commissioned by the See also:United States See also:Congress to decorate a stairway in the Capitol at See also:Washington, for which he painted a large See also:composition, " Westward the See also:Star of See also:Empire takes its Way." His best-known work, popular through See also:engraving, is " Washington See also:crossing the See also:Delaware," a large See also:canvas containing a See also:score of See also:life-sized figures; it is now owned by the See also:Metropolitan Museum of Art, New See also:York. He became a member of the See also:National Academy of See also:Design in 186o, and died at Washington, D.C., on the 18th of See also:July 1868. LEVALLOIS-PERRET, a See also:north-western suburb of See also:Paris, on the right See also:bank of the See also:Seine, 21 M. from the centre of the See also:city. Pop. (1906) 61,419. It carries on the manufacture of motor-cars and accessories, carriages, groceries, See also:liqueurs, See also:perfumery, See also:soap, &c., and has a See also:port on the Seine.
