LOANGO , a region on the See also:west See also:coast of See also:Africa, extending from the mouth of the See also:Congo See also:river in 6° S. northwards through about two degrees. At one See also:time included in the " See also:kingdom of Congo " (see See also:ANGOLA, See also:History), Loango became See also:independent about the See also:close of_the 16th See also:century, and was still of considerable importance in the See also:middle of the 18th century. Buali, the See also:capital, was situated on the See also:banks of a small river not far from the See also:port of Loango, where were several See also:European " factories." The See also:country afterwards became divided into a large number of See also:petty states, while See also:Portugal and See also:France exercised an intermittent See also:sovereignty over the coast. Here the slave See also:trade was longer maintained than anywhere else on the West See also:African seaboard; since its extirpation, See also:palm oil and See also:india-See also:rubber have been the See also:main See also:objects of See also:commerce. The Loango coast is now divided between See also:French Congo and the Portuguese See also:district of See also:Kabinda (see those articles).
