MIDDLEBURY , a See also:village and the See also:county-seat of See also:Addison county, See also:Vermont, U.S.A., in Middlebury township, on See also:Otter See also:Creek, about 31 M. N.N.W. of See also:Rutland. Pop. of the village (189o), 1762; (1900), 1897 (221 See also:foreign-See also:born); (191o), 1866; of the township, (190o), 3045; (191o), 2848. Middlebury is served by the Rutland railroad. It is picturesquely situated near the See also:Green See also:Mountain range, and is the seat of Middlebury See also:College (chartered, 1800; co-educational since 1883),which offers a classical course and a Latin-scientific course, and had in 1907-1908 12 instructors and 203 students (84 of whom were See also:women), and a library of 35,000 volumes. The See also:Sheldon See also:art museum and a public library are among the public institutions of the village, and the See also:principal buildings include the See also:court-See also:house and the See also:opera-house. The principal See also:industrial establishments are See also:marble quarries, " See also:Italian " marble See also:works, See also:iron foundries, See also:lime-kilns, See also:flour-See also:mills, and See also:door, See also:sash and See also:lumber mills. About x m. See also:north of the village, in the township of See also:Weybridge, there is a large See also:United States See also:government breeding station for See also:Morgan horses; and See also:merino See also:sheep are raised in the vicinity. The township of Middlebury was incorporated in 1761, and the first See also:settlement on the site of the See also:present village was made in 1773. At the outbreak of the See also:War of-See also:Independence the settlement was deserted, and all except two or three of the houses were destroyed by See also:British troops; but the settlers returned soon after the See also:close of the war, and the township was formally organized and sent a• member to the See also:state See also:assembly in 1788.
