COMTE DE (1801-1880), See also:French statesman, was See also:born at See also:Valence on the 25th of See also:April 18oi, the second son of See also:Jean See also:Pierre Bachasson, comte de Montalivet (1766-1823), who had been made a peer of See also:France in 1819. Both his See also:father and his See also:elder See also:brother See also:Simon Pierre See also:Joseph (1799-1823) had been engineer See also:officers, and he was educated at the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole See also:des Ponts et Chaussees. Under See also:Louis Philippe he occupied the See also:ministry of the interior from, with See also:short intervals, 1830 to 1840. After 1840 he was See also:intendant of the See also:civil See also:list, occupying himself with the museums of See also:Versailles and the Louvre, and the restoration of the palaces of See also:Fontainebleau and See also:Saint-See also:Cloud. In 1847 he tried to induce Louis Philippe to adopt electoral reform, and after the See also:catastrophe of the next See also:year undertook the See also:defence of the See also:July See also:monarchy in two See also:works, Le Roi Louis Philippe et la liste civile (1851) and Rien! See also:Dix annees de gouvernement parlemen- taire (1862). He had become a member of the See also:Academy of See also:Fine Arts in 1840 and in 1843 See also:grand See also:cross of the See also:Legion of See also:Honour. The attitude of the comte de See also:Chambord after 1870 led him to accept the See also:republic, and he entered the See also:Senate a year before his See also:death, on the 4th of See also:January 1880.
