The town occupies the site of the See also:ancient Eryx, a See also:city of the Elymi, a See also:people who claimed to be sprung from a mixed See also:settlement of Trojans and PhocianS after the fall of See also:Troy (E. A. See also:Freeman, See also:History of Sicily, i. 195, 542), but regarded as f3ip0apoa by the Greeks. The city' was famous for the See also:temple of See also:Venus Erycina, to the See also:foundations of which a See also:wall of 12 courses of See also:masonry in the See also:castle probably belongs. The See also:worship was a relic of the Phoenician cult of See also:Astarte. In 415 B.C. the Athenian envoys were shown the treasure of the temple at Eryx as available for the expenses of the See also:war, which treasure turned out to be only See also:silver-gilt and not of solid See also:gold (See also:Thucydides vi. 46). The town must have become a See also:part of the Carthaginian dominion in 405 B.C.

It was seized by See also:

Pyrrhus in 278 B.C., and was ceded to See also:Rome at the end of the First Punic War. In See also:Roman times the temple (like that of See also:Diana Tifatana, near See also:Capua) possessed territory of its own, being dependent neither on the See also:state nor on any neighbouring town, and a considerable number of See also:female slaves. The See also:place was the See also:residence of the See also:quaestor in See also:charge of the western See also:half of the See also:island, ard See also:Verres, as See also:praetor, seems to have spent a See also:good See also:deal of See also:time here. Considerable portions of the city wall are preserved on the See also:north-See also:west; on the See also:east and See also:south the precipitous cliffs formed a sufficient See also:defence. The remains date from a reconstruction of Roman times,' in which the material of two earlier periods has been used: the large blocks belonging to the See also:original fortifications See also:bear Phoenician masons' marks; but the See also:long See also:line of towers at See also:regular intervals is a thoroughly Roman characteristic. The castle, dating from the See also:middle ages, with three lofty towers guarding the entrance, occupies the south-eastern extremity of the town. The See also:cathedral, founded in 1314, has a See also:fine See also:porch and See also:Gothic See also:facade.
