It is situated on the Parramatta See also:River, an See also:arm of See also:Port See also:Jackson, and was one of the earliest inland settlements (1788), the seat of many of the public establishments connected with the working of the convict See also:system. Many of these still remain in another See also:form (the See also:district See also:hospital, the lunatic See also:asylum, the See also:gaol, two asylums for the infirm and destitute, the See also:Protestant and See also:Catholic See also:orphan See also:schools), involving a See also:government See also:expenditure which partly sustains the business of the town. Parramatta was one of the earliest seats of the See also:tweed manufacture, but its See also:principal See also:industrial dependence has been on the See also:fruit See also:trade. With the exception of Prospect and See also:Pennant Hills, where there is an outburst of See also:trap See also:rock, the See also:surface See also:soil is the disintegration of the Wainamatta shale, which is well suited for orangeries and orchards. The first See also:grain grown in the See also:colony was harvested at Parramatta, then called Rosehill. The earlier See also:governors had their See also:country See also:residence near the town, but the domain is now a public See also:park in the hands of the See also:municipality. An See also:early See also:observatory, where in 1822 were made the observations for the Parramatta See also:Catalogue, numbering 7385 stars, has See also:long been abandoned.
