SHWEBO , a See also:town and See also:district in the See also:Sagaing See also:division of Upper See also:Burma. The town is situated in the midst of a See also:rice See also:plain, 53 m. by See also:rail N.E. from See also:Mandalay: pop. (19o1) 9626. It is of historic See also:interest as the birthplace and See also:capital of See also:Alompra, the founder of the last Burmese See also:dynasty. After See also:British See also:annexation it became an important military See also:cantonment; but only the wing of a See also:European See also:regiment is now stationed here. The See also:area of the district is 5634 sq. m.; pop. (1901) 286,891, showing an increase of 24% in the See also:decade. It lies between the See also:Katha, Upper and See also:Lower See also:Chindwin and Mandalay districts. The See also:Irrawaddy forms the dividing See also:line on the See also:east. The See also:physical features of the district vary considerably. The Minwun range runs down the whole eastern See also:side, skirting the Irrawaddy. In the See also:north it is a defined range, but at Sheinmaga, in the See also:south, it sinks to an undulation. See also:West of the Mu See also:river, in the centre of the district, there is a See also:gradual ascent to the hills which See also:divide

Sagaing from the Upper Chindwin. Between these ranges and on both sides of the Mu is a plain, unbroken except for some isolated hills in the north and north-east and the See also:low Sadaung-gyi range in the south-east. The greater See also:part of this plain is a rice-growing See also:tract, but on the sloping ground See also:maize, millets, sesamum, See also:cotton and peas are raised. A See also:good See also:deal of See also:sugar is also produced from groves of the taxi See also:palm. The Mu river is navigable for three months in the See also:year, from See also:June to See also:August, but in the dry See also:season it can be forded almost anywhere. A good deal of See also:salt is produced in a line which closely follows the railway. See also:Coal has been worked at Letkokpin, near the Irrawaddy.
The Ye-u reserved forests are much more valuable than those to the east on the Minwun and the Mudein. Extensive See also:irrigation See also:works existed in Shwebo district, but they See also:fell into disrepair in See also: It varies from an See also:average of 29 to 49 in. The average temperature is 90° in the hot season, and falls to 6o° or 61° in the See also:cold season, the maximum and minimum readings being 1040 and 56°.
