TOWCESTER , a See also:

S.S.W. of See also:Northampton, on the See also:East & See also:West Junction and the Northampton & See also:Banbury Junction See also:railways. Pop. (19or), 2371. It is pleasantly situated on the small See also:river Tove, a See also:left-See also:bank affluent of the See also:Ouse. The See also:church of St See also:Lawrence is a See also:good See also:Early See also:English, Decorated and Perpendicular See also:building, with a See also:fine western Perpendicular See also:tower. There are a considerable agricultural See also:trade and a manufacture of boots and shoes. Here was a See also:Roman town or See also:village situated on Watling See also:Street. The site has yielded a considerable number of See also:relics. In the loth See also:century a fortress was maintained here against the invading Danes. The site of both this and the Roman station is marked by an artificial See also:mound known as See also:Burg See also:Hill, not far from the church, above the river. Towcester, with the whole of this See also:district, witnessed a large See also:part of the operations during the See also:Civil See also:War of the 17th century.
