Carefully educated by his See also:mother and under the direction of See also:Colonel Osio, he outgrew the weakness of his childhood and became See also:expert in See also:horsemanship and military exercises. Entering the See also:army at an See also:early See also:age he passed through the various grades and, soon after attaining his See also:majority, was appointed to the command of the See also:Florence Army See also:Corps. During frequent journeys to See also:Germany he enlarged his military experience, and upon his See also:appointment to the command of the Naples Army Corps in 1896 displayed See also:sound military and administrative capacity. A keen See also:huntsman, and passionately fond of the See also:sea, he extended his See also:yachting and See also:hunting excursions as far See also:east as See also:Syria and as far See also:north as See also:Spitsbergen. As representative of King Humbert he attended the See also:coronation of See also:Tsar See also:Nicholas II. in 1896, the Victorian See also:Jubilee celebrations of 1897, and the festivities connected with the coming of age of the See also:German See also:crown See also:prince in 1900. The prince's intellectual and See also:artistic leanings were well known; in particular, he has made a magnificent collection of historic See also:Italian coins, on which subject he became a recognized authority. At the See also:time of the assassination of his See also:father, King Humbert (the 29th of See also:July 1900), he was returning from a yachting cruise in the eastern Mediterranean. Landing at Reggio di See also:Calabria he hastened to See also:Monza, where he conducted with firmness and tact the preparations for the See also:burial of King Humbert and for his own formal See also:accession, which took See also:place on the 9th and 1th of See also:August 1900. On the 24th of See also:October 1896 he married Princess Elena of See also:Montenegro, who, on the 1st of See also:June 1901, See also:bore him a daughter named Yolanda Margherita, on the 19th of November 1902 a second daughter named Mafalda, and on the 15th of See also:September 1904 a son, Prince Humbert.
