VICTOR II ., the successor of See also:Leo IX., was consecrated in St See also:Peter's, See also:Rome, on the 13th of See also:April 1055. His See also:father was a Swabian See also:baron, See also:Count Hartwig von See also:Calw, and his own baptismal name was Gebhard. At the instance of Gebhard, See also:bishop of See also:Regensburg, See also:uncle of the See also:emperor See also:Henry III., he had been appointed while still a See also:young See also:man to the see of Eichstadt; in this position his See also:great talents soon enabled him to render important services to Henry, whose See also:chief adviser he ultimately became. His nomination to the papacy by Henry, at See also:Mainz, in See also:September 1054, was made at the instance of a See also:Roman deputation headed by See also:Hildebrand, 'whose policy doubtless was to detach from the imperial See also:interest one of its ablest supporters. In See also:June 1055 Victor met the emperor at See also:Florence, and held a See also:council, which anew condemned clerical marriages, See also:simony and the See also:alienation of the estates of the See also:church. In the following See also:year he was summoned to See also:Germany to the See also:side of the emperor, and was with him when he died at Botfeld in the Harz on the 5th of See also:October ro56. As See also:guardian of Henry's See also:infant son, and adviser of the empress See also:Agnes, Victor now wielded enormous See also:power, which he began to use with much tact for the See also:maintenance of See also:peace throughout the See also:empire and for strengthening the papacy against the aggressions of the barons.
