WELLSVILLE , a See also:

city of Columbiana See also:county, See also:Ohio, U.S.A., about 35 M. S. of See also:Youngstown, on the Ohio See also:river. Pop. (189o) 5247; (1900) 6,46 (475 being See also:foreign-See also:born and 113 negroes); (1910) 7769. Wellsville is served by the See also:Pennsylvania railway, and by an interurban electric See also:line connecting with See also:Rochester, Pa., and See also:Steubenville, Ohio. It is in a region which has See also:rich deposits of See also:coal, natural See also:gas, oil and See also:clay; and there are various manufactures. The neighbourhood was first settled in 1795 by one See also:James See also:Clark of See also:Washington county, Pennsylvania, who bought a See also:tract of 304 acres here and who transferred it a See also:year afterwards to his son-in-See also:law, See also:William See also:Wells, in whose See also:honour the See also:settlement was named in 182o when it was platted. From 1832 to 1852 Wellsville was an important See also:shipping point on the Ohio, with daily steamboats to See also:Pittsburg; it was incorporated as a See also:village in 1848, and was chartered as a city in 1890.
