See also:bank of the See also:Mississippi See also:river, here crossed by three See also:steel See also:bridges. Pop. (188o) 10,208; (1890) 18,208; (1900) 19,714, of whom 5000 were See also:foreign-See also:born and 30 negroes; (1910 See also:census) 18,583. There are large See also:German and See also:Polish elements in the See also:population; and German and Polish See also:journals, besides two dailies in See also:English, are published here. Winona is served by the See also:Chicago , See also:Burlington & See also:Quincy, the Chicago See also:Great Western, the Chicago, See also:Milwaukee & St Paul, the See also:Green See also:Bay & Western, and the Chicago & See also:North-Western See also:railways, and by river steamboat lines. It is picturesquely situated on a broad, level See also:terrace, slightly elevated above the river, and surmounted by steep bluffs rising to 400-500 ft. At Winona are the Winona See also:General See also:Hospital (1894), to which is attached a Nurses' Training School; the first See also:State Normal School (opened in 186o), and Winona See also:Seminary (1894) for girls, conducted by the Sisters of See also:Saint See also:Francis. The city has a public library (about 30,000 vols.), with a mural decoration by See also:Kenyon See also:Cox; a Federal See also:building; a Masonic See also:Temple; and several parks; and it owns its own See also:water See also:supply (operated by the See also:Holly See also:system). In 1905 the See also:total value of the factory product was $7,850,236 (30.5% more than in 1900). The site of the city was frequently used as a landing See also:place in the old See also:fur-trading days, but was not permanently settled until about 1853.
