ABAE ("A(3ar.) , a See also:town in the N.E. corner of See also:Phocis, in See also:Greece, famous in See also:early times for its See also:oracle of See also:Apollo, one of those consulted by See also:Croesus (See also:Herod. i. 46). It was See also:rich in treasures (Herod. viii. 33), but was sacked by the Persians, and the See also:temple remained in a ruined See also:state. The oracle was, however, still consulted, e.g. by the Thebans before See also:Leuctra (Paus. iv. 32. 5). The temple seems to have been burnt again during the Sacred See also:War, and was in a very dilapidated state when seen by See also:Pausanias (x. 35), though some restoration, as well as the See also:building of a new temple, was undertaken by See also:Hadrian. The sanctity of the See also:shrine ensured certain privileges to the See also:people of Abae (See also:Bull. Corresp. See also:Hell. vi.

171), and these were confirmed by the See also:

Romans. The polygonal walls of the See also:acropolis may still be seen in a See also:fair state of preserva-tion on a circular See also:hill See also:standing about 500 ft. above the little See also:plain of Exarcho ; one gateway remains, and there are also traces of town walls below. The temple site was on a See also:low See also:spur of the hill, below the town. An early See also:terrace See also:wall supports a See also:precinct in which are a See also:stoa and some remains of temples ; these were excavated by the See also:British School at See also:Athens in 1894, but very little was found.
