BAYEZID I . (1347-1403), See also:

Ottoman See also:sultan, surnamed YILDERIM or " See also:LIGHTNING," from the See also:great rapidity of his movements, succeeded his See also:father See also:Murad I. on the latter's assassination on the See also:field of See also:Kossovo, 1389, and signalized his See also:accession by ordering at once the See also:execution of his See also:brother Yakub, who had distinguished himself in the See also:battle. His arms were successful both in See also:Europe and See also:Asia, and he was the first Ottoman See also:sovereign to be styled " sultan," which See also:title he induced the titular Abbasid See also:caliph to confer on him. After routing the See also:chivalry of Christendom at the battle of See also:Nikopoli in 1396, he pursued his victorious career in See also:Greece, and See also:Constantinople would doubtless have fallen before his attack, had not the See also:emperor See also:Manuel See also:Palaeologus bought him off by timely concessions which reduced him practically to the position of Bayezid's See also:vassal. But his conquests met with a sudden and overpowering check at the hands of Timur (Tamer-See also:lane). Utterly defeated at See also:Angora by the Mongol invader, Bayezid became his prisoner, and died in captivity some months later, in See also:March 1403. Bayezid first married Devlet Shah Khatun, daughter of the See also:prince of Kermian, who brought him in See also:dowry See also:Kutaiah and its dependencies. Two years before his accession he also married a daughter of the emperor See also:John Palaeologus.
